USA Gymnastics recently announced that they have updated the Team selection procedures, to be more transparent, for artistic and rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling for World Championships, Pan American Games and the Olympic Games. Acro will undergo similar reviews in time for the 2020 World Championships.
“All procedures going forward offer more transparency, defined discretionary criteria, the addition of an independent observer to the final selection committee meeting, and a process for removal of selection committee members should a conflict of interest exists.” states USA Gymnastics.
In addition, an “independent observer” will attend the final selection committee meetings for Pan Am Games, Worlds, and the Olympic Games. This “independent observer” will make sure all selection procedures are being followed as written.
Once the final selection committee has named named their teams, a written summary will be shared with athletes and coaches who participated in selection process that outline the work and decisions of the selection committee. The report will also be published online.
Li Li Leung, USA Gymnastics President and CEO explains, “Based on feedback from members, the Board looked into the selection procedures for major international events like Worlds and the Olympics. Our athletes and their coaches deserve a more clearly defined process and more transparency. Refining the team selection process was a collaborative effort between members of the Board and program representatives. Thus far, feedback on the changes has been positive.”
